NaNoWriMo

I’m not sure if I have confessed this in any of our past articles, but if not, I will confess today: I love to write and want to write full time. Writing is something I have enjoyed doing since I can remember learning to write. Needless to say, writing consumes a lot of my time between this blog, my personal blog, and now my most recent project NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). With a love for writing comes a love for reading, and books in general. I read a lot of fiction (Robert Ludlum, Ted Bell, Tom Clancy, Oliver North, John Grisham, etc…), non-fiction (personal finances, writing, entrepreneurship, web design, leadership), and am now going to try and write my own fiction novel.
I have tried to write a novel in the past, I failed miserably, but I tried. The two reasons I have not picked that manuscript up since I stopped are 1) no encouragement to do so and 2) no deadline to finish it. The idea behind NaNoWriMo are exactly those two things. The community behind and involved in this challenge encourage one another to write 50,000 words and to do so within 30 days (the deadline aspect). I just stumbled upon this website on Wednesday of this week (the challenge begins Tomorrow, November 1st) and cannot wait to start…
But I have so much to write here as well. While I was sitting at my desk today I decided that November will just be a month of burn-out. Then I got home and finished a few financial articles I had been working on for this site and knew that if I do try and achieve the NaNoWriMo challenge that I am going to need to give as much as I can to both, but without burning out. Burn out will do nothing but have a negative effect on December and the content for November.
I write this to let you know that the articles I write for you in the month of November may be shorter than usual, as I write a novel and write here. They will still be rich with content and items you can take away and apply but they will be shorter and more to the point. And who knows, maybe this will turn out to be better for this website and the content that we offer you.
If you visit the about page you will be able to keep track of my progress as each day passes. The goal is 50,000 words by midnight November 30th. This is roughly 175 pages, which is really a medium sized novel. I am very excited to embark on this challenge and look forward to what my imagination has to offer. As of this writing I have no plot in mind and have not even begun to think of characters to work with. But like I said, you will be updated via the about page during the month of November, and you can also visit my profile on the NaNoWriMo website to read excerpts from my book. Wish me luck!!

I’m glad to see you’re going to tackle NaNoWriMo! I’ve added you to my buddy list on the NaNo site, along with a number of others from the Podcamp communities that I know are participating. Good Luck! Hopefully the encouragement we can all share with eachother helps us get through those times when writing hurts…
Write well,
Dawn

Wow that’s freakin awesome. I love to write as well, but when it comes to a novel- I wouldn’t even know where to start!
Best of luck to you on your journey. Keep us updated.

Thanks for the great info! Too Shy to Stop just featured a discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham as inspiration for NaNoWriMo. You can read the article here.
